In addition to our organ of balance, the inner ear and our eyes (optical system) participate in the vestibular system. Also countless position receptors in our muscles and joints (proprioceptive system) are part of it. Our brain is capable of compensating for the partial or even complete failure of the organ of equilibrium. This remarkable ability is called central vestibular compensation. The better our brain learns to process only correct information and to ignore false sensory impressions, the better our balance functions.
